Time at Home

Friday, December 30, 2016

Selah June and I spent the day together at home while Jeremy was at work. We did make a Target run, but otherwise kept it low key.

I’ve purposefully tried to pull out one or two new presents a day to give her time to really focus on playing and having fun with each one.  Christmas can be a little overwhelming for a 2-year-old! So today we played with our Finding Nemo art set and our magnetic doll with clothes set.

I was so impressed that she would take out one color at a time and then put it back when she was finished.  She must have sensed that because it soon turned to her pulling every marker top off and storing them them in the back of her pink car.

She was really interested in coloring the picture pages, and I colored

with her.  She noticed that I was coloring in all the bubbles. She decided that she wanted to do that too.  And she really did try to color inside the lines.  Look at how she’s holding the markers! I’m constantly amazed at her fine motor skills and her ability to do pretty complex tasks. We are going to have lots of fun coloring together for years to come.

Christmas with Grandma and Aunt Madison

Friday, December 23 – Thursday, December 29, 2016

Selah June woke up from her nap to see Grandma and Madison from Oklahoma here for Christmas! Madison brought finger paints that were clear gels. When they touched the paper, they would turn colors.  SJ loved it and loved the attention!  Madison is amazing with kids. Selah June quickly became her tiny little friend.

Here’s a picture of the guest room after we got it finished in time for their visit.

We went to the Settle’s Christmas at Kim and Tom’s house.  Spaghetti and meatballs!  Yummy!!! Jessica also made tiramisu and gluten-free chocolate cake.  It was delicious. We opened Christmas presents with the kids and exchanged presents with Nana and Papa.

Early Sunday morning at our house…

Selah Juney woke up very early on Christmas morning.  Even her little 2-year-old self knew that something magical had happened that night. We found all of the presents under the tree and very quickly began to plead to open them.  This year marks the first time she has understood that presents have good things inside of them, and she wants to open every one, little piece by little piece to discover the treasurers hidden inside.  She is so funny in the way she opens presents.  She has to stay on top of the mess she’s making. Each piece of paper is added to the pile, and the pile is kept together in a place separate and out of the way.

Selah June LOVED her Frozen microphone. Best $5 present EVER!!!!!

She immediately had to turn it on and sing to it….and again again and again.  It was difficult opening her other present single-handedly, but somehow she made it work.

Jeremy captured her initial reaction to her big present – her bicycle.  It was classic.  She pretty much looked at it and then ran off. Only later did she decide to try to take it for a spin.

While singing into her microphone – of course.

When all the presents were finally opened, she took a break to watch some cartoons.

Late Sunday morning….

Got my Diet Coke ready in my custom monogrammed thermos from Kim and Tom.

Winston and Satie planned to tell the story of Christmas using the manger scene set up by the tree and presents. It turned into a silent puppet show for the two of them, their backs to us the whole time.

All the kids in a sea of presents.

There was quite a lot to take in…

But she was stylin’ in her flannel Christmas pajamas – even though it was 80 degrees outside.

Even later Sunday…

Ab made delicious desserts for Christmas Day.  I snuck some home for a little nighttime treat.

Peanut butter cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies. ❤

SJ got a Paw Patrol couch that converts to a bed. It was a big hit. Even after we came home, she pulled her couch right up to the hearth and settled in for a nice little movie.

Monday December 26, 2016 – the Beach!!

Turquoise Place has a new key system.  Every guest wears a bracelet that lets them into all the areas of the property. Why does SJ need a bracelet you might ask… Because each bracelet is $20 to replace if lost or taken from the condo.

On her way to the beach for an adventure!!!

Grandma loved the sand between her toes…

The surf was a little rough, but the sun was low and the breeze was nice. We walked along the shore picking up tiny seashells.

Maddie and I found a great little perch and camped out.  Within just a few moments, the waves swooshed under us and soaked our pants. Felt that!!

It was a beautiful sunset that first night.

Mom and Dad joined us in time for dinner at Lambert’s. The place was full, but we didn’t have to wait too long. Everybody loved the food (ALL THE FOOD!!!).  Grandma and Maddie had the veggie plate and loved the fried okra, fried potatoes, carrots, rolls, and beets.  As usual the macaroni was weird.  SJ made herself useful by organizing the little packets of seasoning and condiments before choosing down on a big roll and some chicken.

We all stayed up late visiting and letting our food settle. Nonetheless, with a little one in the bed and a sinus infection brewing in my head, I was up before sunrise. And I wasn’t the only one. Miss Priss woke up in the middle of the night and joined Grandma on the couch for some milk and a movie.

The sunrise was spectacular!!!!!!

I couldn’t decide which of these I loved the best…so I uploaded all of them. On Tuesday we went shopping at the outlets, and SJ had a nap and played with Grandma.

We picked up dinner at Publix and had a nice meal together at the condo. Then Maddie and Mom sketched together while Dad and I read our books. I can’t remember the last time I just spent time reading with no attention to the time.

Wednesday we all loaded up in our cars early and went to visit the Gulf Shores Zoo. Maddie and Linda followed the television series called “The Little Zoo That Could” – all about the Gulf Shores Zoo and its efforts to rebuild after a devastating hurricane that hit the coast a decade ago. It’s the same zoo that has snow leopard cubs from time to time that you can play with. At the moment, there are lemur, sloth, and anteater encounters. Maddie really wanted to see both the lemurs and the sloths.

SJ took another crack at handling a wagon through a walking adventure.  The last version of this was the Christmas lights at Bellingrath Gardens. That turned into a nightmare with her throwing a fit because we couldn’t let her push the wagon. People were backing up behind us and understandably growing impatient. This time went a little better, in part because there wasn’t really a line. But she still stubbornly bossed the adults around and insisted on having her own way.  We’ve got to continue to work on that. Grandma is probably right that the zoo experience will be completely different a year from now.  Let’s hope so! And in a good way!

Grandma bought her a book in the gift shop. It is about an alligator and has an alligator puppet built into it. She was very tired and couldn’t enjoy it over lunch, but we pulled it back out later at the condo and worked on developing a persona for the gator.

Man I felt terrible on Wednesday. My cold developed into a sinus infection, and I just couldn’t keep it together. Though I tried riding exercise bikes with Mom (and spotted dolphins while at it!!!!) and tried taking drugs and massaging my lymph glands, I just couldn’t muster the energy to get dressed to go to dinner. My glands were so swollen and sinuses Inflamed that it hurt to open my jaw. I needed rest and used a hot compress on my face to relieve some of the pain.

Selah Juney was content to eat some applesauce, chicken, and cookies for dinner.

The sunset was beautiful once again.

Little Miss went to bed with her Daddy. This is what I found when I went to bed myself.

Somebody crashed out in their bed in the bed. What a wonderful and rich day.

The last week has been absolutely cram packed with quality time and Christmas celebrations, vacation and new experiences, and rest and relaxation. I could not have asked for a better time. Selah June had a great holiday break at age 2.  What a way to bring in the new year!!

We’re tuckered out!

Christmas Eve Eve

Friday, December 23, 2016

Madison and Grandma came from Oklahoma to see us for Christmas!!!!  Selah June and Mommy did some last minute shopping for finishing touches to the house and helped Grammy with stocking stuffers.

While we were waiting for Grammy and Grandpa to pick us up, we took some selfies on the porch.

While we were riding in the backseat of the Pilot, she started pretending to be asleep.  “I sleeping. Don’t touch me.” We started saying “No!!!  Wake up!!  You’re not sleepy!  Wake up!”  She would laugh and squint her eyes open to see if we were still looking at her.  It was a hoot.

After Linda and Madison arrived, we played for a few hours.  Selah June LOVED having an adult cater to her every whim. Madison did “paints” with her. They brought an awesome finger painting set that used a clear gel that turned colors only when it was applied to the paper. I’m a BIG fan. Then they played in the toy room, Selah June made us a picnic to eat upstairs next to the bed in our room.

I took her to Tom and Kim’s for the extended family get together. She had a blast playing with the little kids and loved getting presents. We had spaghetti – a favorite shared by Satie Isabella and Selah Juney. Everyone thought it was hysterical to watch her put whole handfuls of noodles in her mouth at a time.

At one point, SJ had a poopy diaper, and the other kids made sure to tell me about it. I changed her right there in the room where they were all playing to avoid a core meltdown. Then, about an hour later, Jessica said “You know you put her diaper on inside out.  She just peed, and it didn’t absorb any of it.” What?  I know I’m crazy as a loon these days, but I also know I didn’t do THAT! Sure enough… they diaper was on inside out.  The only explanation is that the girls decided to “change her diaper” and took her pull-ups off and put them back on inside out. Sheer craziness…

Christmas Cookies!!

Thursday, December 22, 2016

Today we had a play date with Miss Sara and Harrison. We made sugar cookies and decorated them with sprinkles. Harrison has an awesome playroom with trampoline, and his grandma sits on the floor and plays puzzles too!

We also watched Curious George’s Boofest…Harrison loves it just like Selah Juney!

Christmas and Meltdowns

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Today was one of the more challenging ones we’ve had here at the Evans’ homestead. I think Selah June is getting molars in and/or fighting a cold.  She has been super testy lately. More than anything, she is being super moody and super picky. Tonight, just for example, she didn’t want me to sit on the bed (on my side in the same place I always sit). She didn’t want to wear clothes – any clothes including ones she picked out. She didn’t want me to touch her. And she only wanted Daddy to carry her downstairs – “NOT YOU!”

But there were some hysterical moments between all the gnashing of teeth ones.

When Jingle Bell Rock came on, she got super excited and started singing Jingle Bells. (That is not a good mash-up, by the way.) When Jeremy did carry her down the stairs even though his foot was hurting and she knew it, she said, “You’re a big boy!”  And when I followed him into her room to give her kisses, she said “good night, guys.” Somehow I never imagined having a 2-year-old who would say that.  Not in my wildest dreams. I should listen to myself speak more I suppose.  I say “bye, guys” all the time.  But it’s a hoot when it comes right back from the mouth of babes.

Here’s day 2 of working on our Shopkins gingerbread house.

Our First Non-Family Birthday Party

Saturday, December 17, 2016

My friend Sara (as opposed to my family members who are stuck with me) invited us to Harrison’s birthday party.  Harrison just turned 4 and LOVES Curious George.  Sara and Harrison wore Curious George t-shirts, and Selah June tried to scare everybody by grinning and saying Boo!  She loves Boofest.

The party was at Chucky Cheese….our first real foray into that crazy land. Selah June loved the tokens, but she quickly learned that the machines didn’t give them back. She also liked the tickets and held on to her cup of tokens and all her tickets the whole time.  I offered to help carry them, but she wasn’t about to let go of them.

She went down the big slide and loved it, but I had to help her up the staggered steps.  The other kids kept telling me I was too big for it.  (Thanks, kid…)

She also liked skeeball, but she had a special way of doing things.

She wouldn’t let me help at all. You can see her cup of tokens and tickets.img_8106

This machine was particularly useful for laying out your tickets and tokens.img_8107

It was really a lot to take in for a 2-year-old (not to mention a 39-year-old).img_8110

We spilled all our stuff and had to take a break to pick it up.img_8111

We love pizza!! (But it does not love us, so “pizza” is sans cheese.img_8113

Our Last Day at Our First School

Friday, December 16, 2016

i have so many mixed feelings today.  For the last week or so, the teachers in SJ’s classroom have been expressing separation anxiety from her.  They love her.  She was the oldest kid in her class, and she ruled the roost.  She knew every classmate across the 2 – year-old and 3 – year-old classes by name. And she had rivalries and relationships with all of them.  She loves Miss Ceara and Miss Nikki. Every single day she runs for the car but makes sure to say goodbye and express her affection to them.

UWF is going to be great, but St. Luke’s was a specia place for us. Our very first class crafts, snack times, playground romps, school pictures, and special programs for parents happened there. Miss Ceara isn’t the only one tearing up today.

In general, I’m acutely feeling the pangs of transition and growth. I only have one baby to parent….and she’s growing up way too fast. I hate that I miss so much while I’m at work and she is learning new things and playing with others. But I know God has a plan for our family. I do trust that He will provide the peace I need and take care of her when I’m not there. And it gives me the motivation I need to use our time together to enjoy learning and playing together – a thing that I can easily take for granted when I have uninterrupted stretches of time with her day in and day out.

Today was Abigail’s Birthday at school. They had a pj day and a Christmas party with birthday party hats for everyone. Selah Juney didn’t want to take her party hat off, but she really didn’t like the elastic under her chin.  Miss Ceara found a brilliant solution and secured it to her ponytails.  She wore it all day.  In fact she’s napping with it on her head right now.  She might never let me wash her hair again….img_8085 img_8086 img_8089

The School Commute

img_7983

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

Jeremy tried to go back to work last week, but it really didn’t go very well.  The doctor encouraged him to take another week off. So Selah June and I have been spending quality time going to and from school every day.

I can’t believe that we re moving away from St. Luke’s in just a few weeks.  She has been so happy there, and the teachers have loved on her so much.

Every morning she loves to race you to the door.  She goes up the ramp, and she makes you go up

the stairs.

That’s a girl on a mission!img_7989

When she gets inside we yell, “Here we come, everybody!! Don’t have fun without us!!”img_7990

SJ Selfies

Selah June really doesn’t like for me to take her picture. However, she does like to see herself on my phone screen.  So we made silly pictures of different emotions.

Tangles

img_7955

Saturday, December 3, 2016

Selah June has discovered that the little rings that connect baby toys to car seats and play mats make for perfect bracelets.  I called them “bangles” a few times, and that morphed into “tangles.”  These are her tangles.

A girl after my own heart.
