The Junes….

October 14, 2014

Jamie and Stacie are here with Penelope June to celebrate the birth of sweet Selah June.  We’ve had extraordinary adventures already — seeing the ocean for the first time, going to “the fun park,” and hanging out at the mall (Penelope’s most favorite place ever).

There’s a big birthday in just a few weeks.  Penelope is turning 3!  One of her favorite places in the mall is Claire’s.  One shopping extravaganza later, and we had a glittery set of wings and a beautiful pony.  Success indeed!

Once home, we had to have a baby-holdin’ fix.  Penelope is AMAZING with Selah June.  She likes to have her hands under the baby, but she’s very careful and quiet to make sure she doesn’t wake her up.  Penelope calls her “Baby Selah.”

We all went to Aaron and Jessica’s house to have brisket.  And Satie fell in love with Penelope today, echoing Stacie by singing “P” all around the playground and the house and then giving her a super huge hug that left “P” wondering what in the world….

Beach Babe… in October

October 13, 2014

Jamie, Stacie, and Penelope came to visit Selah June, and we took P to the beach.  I’ve never heard a child be so excited!  She squealed and laughed and stomped with glee.  And I had no idea P was so fearless!  The waves were rougher than I’ve ever seen them – absent a hurricane.  On a red flag day, Penelope wanted to strap on her life jacket and head for the waves.  As the waves rushed nearly over her head, she screamed and hopped up and down.  Jamie held her as best he could, but she was something else.

It was also Selah June’s first time in a bathing suit!

I was worried about the sun, but I wrapped her up in the Mobi and she slept the whole time.  It was wonderful to be outside, in the ocean breeze, with my punkin nestled up so close to me.  I held her and caressed her little back rolled up in a ball on my chest.

What was life like before Selah June?  I can barely remember.

Another Day of Firsts

We had our first doctor’s visit today.

It’s amazing to me how many times I find myself thinking I’m totally prepared only to be ridiculously unprepared and having to improvise.  We didn’t have an insurance card for her (not our fault!).  We didn’t have her family medical history (thank goodness for texting!).  We didn’t have a blanket to keep her naked but warm for the doctor.  We didn’t have three diapers for when she had a blow-out and peed in the first couple.  We didn’t have….  who knows what else.

And it’s amazing how many things you need for babies!  I always just thought a nipple was a nipple was a nipple.  But NO!  There are preemie nipples and 0-3 month nipples and 6-9 month nipples and 12 month nipples.  Apparently your mouth grows at an exponential rate in the first year.

On a serious note, everything went really well at the doctor.  Selah June weighed in at 8 lbs 3.4 oz!!!  We’re excited over here.  She’s doing great, and the doctor told us to keep up the good work and weigh in at the Nesting Place next week.

We ended our lovely day with a walk — Selah June’s first walk in the neighborhood.  Her faces cracked us up.  I’d don’t think she was that impressed.

Weighing the Odds

Miss Selah June went to her first Mommy and Me at Sacred Heart.  After giving it a shot, we decided it wasn’t our cup of tea.  Everything her mommy said seemed inappropriate for the audience, unintentionally pretentious, or just weird.  The last thing we need right now is to feel weird.  Ain’t nobody got time for that!

The one good thing to come out of it, however, was that we had another weigh in.  Selah June had been eating like a champ.  Mommy and Daddy were feeling all accomplished.  And then, just as we started to think about taking clothes off to get on the scale, there it was….

A total blow-out.

Ugggg…..  All those ounces!!!  Lost into the recesses of another size 1 Pampers Swaddlers.  Still hopeful, we got up on the scale and patiently held our breath.  The numbers went up and down and all over the place until they settled on 8 lbs 1 oz.

Well… That’s not 8 lbs .5 oz.  We have another weigh in at the doctor’s office today.  I’ll keep you posted.  Here’s to holding in our poop until after we take off our clothes!  (How many of us can say we hope for that??)

After a week at home, someone has carved out a wide space for herself.  Selah June’s parents began using nicknames with her in the hospital, but the list has grown to include a whole language of love.  Here are just a few of the words to be heard around the Evans household in a given day.
